Who Needs Dentures?

Dental patients who have a large number of cavities, gum disease or other dental abnormalities such as ectodermal dysplasia may want to consider replacing them with artificial teeth. While implants and crowns are ideal, for many people the cost of these is prohibitive, and dentures are the best alternative option. Partial dentures are often used instead of other tooth replacement methods when the surrounding natural teeth are not strong enough to support structures such as dental bridges, or when more than one or two teeth are missing. Some indications that you could be a good candidate for dentures include:

• A couple of missing teeth, which could be replaced by a partial denture to keep the remaining teeth secure
• Loose and shifting teeth, which may develop as a result of gaps between teeth or tooth decay
• Difficulty eating hard or “chewy” foods, which could be caused by cracked or damaged teeth, cavities, missing tooth or gum disease
• Recurring indigestion or gastric issues, which could be the result of swallowing large pieces of food because you’re unable to chew it properly.
• You’re unhappy with your appearance, because you’re afraid to smile and show less-than-presentable teeth.

You can have dentures fitted at any point in your dental journey, but the best time is to have them made before your remaining teeth are extracted. The dentures can then be inserted into your mouth immediately after extraction, which helps to support your original mouth shape and structure and prevent the changes that begin soon after the teeth are removed. Types of Dentures

Dentures are handcrafted by trained technicians, using custom detailing to provide an individual appearance. The artificial teeth used come in multiple different shades, and are carefully selected to match your remaining teeth or your complexion. The plate uses lightweight dental acrylic that also comes in a variety of pigments to match it with your own gum tissue.

The dentures come in two primary types:

• Complete or full dentures, which are supplied to patients who have all their teeth missing, and
• Partial dentures, which are fitted in patients who still have some of their natural teeth.

A complete denture is an upper or lower that contains the full complement of artificial teeth in the correct positions, held together by a plate that fits the patient’s individual mouth. An upper denture plate fits snugly to the roof of the patient’s mouth and is held in place by its suction properties. A full lower denture either fits over the lower periodontal ridge or it can be secured using denture implants.

Partial dentures consist of a number of teeth connected to each other by an acrylic or metal band or bridge. This type of denture attaches to the remaining natural teeth using resin cement or metal clasps. The band sticks to the back portion of the teeth, preventing it from being seen by others. This is the ideal solution for replacing missing teeth in the front of the mouth without compromising the patient’s appearance.

Precision Dentures

Precision dentures follow two-step impression and bite registration processes to capture the shape of the patient’s mouth more accurately, and use quality, high-impact acrylic for creating the plate. These methods are typically used for creating implant dentures, which have to fit perfectly with no room for adjustment, and usually result in a higher denture price because of the extra care involved in their manufacture.

Cost of Dentures

Cost of the dentures vary depending on the type of the denture and number of teeth you are missing. Generally, a denture can range from $1,800 – $2,200.
